NDDOT wins regional award at America’s Transportation Awards competition

Recognized for making positive changes in the Bismarck community, NDDOT’s State Street construction project has won a regional 2024 America’s Transportation Award. The project improved the safety of the crucial north/south corridor in our capital city. Its $21.4 million price tag placed it as a medium sized project under the Safety category.

The annual competition is sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and highlights the critical role state DOTs play in enhancing mobility and improving quality of life and safety for local communities.

“We are very proud of this project and safety improvements made on State Street,” said NDDOT Director Ron Henke. “This project not only improves the state transportation system, it also makes Bismarck a safer place for motorists and pedestrians.”

The work consisted of replacing and modernizing the traffic signal systems, modifying and adding turn lanes, access revisions, ADA curb ramp improvements, and concrete pavement and structure repairs.

“This project is the culmination of years of work and analysis with the City of Bismarck and the Federal Highway Administration,” said Henke. “We are pleased with the results, and it is nice to get recognition within the industry for our work.”

This year, 106 projects from 39 states were nominated in four different categories. Fortunately, the excitement for NDDOT is not over yet! As a regional winner, the State Street Safety Improvement project will be considered for inclusion in the competition’s top 12 nationwide finalists which will be announced in September. These top contenders will then compete for the two 2024 America’s Transportation Awards national prizes.

Motorcycle safety is for everyone on the road

North Dakotans take full advantage of the warm weather months, including motorcyclists. Outside of regular motorcycle traffic, an increase is expected beginning in August as people travel to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally taking place August 2-11 in South Dakota.

Preliminary data for 2023 shows that there were 16 motorcycle fatalities in North Dakota, a decrease from 21 in 2022. That sounds good, however it’s a jump from 2021’s total of 8 motorcycle fatalities.

Motorists, look twice for motorcycles. Give them plenty of space and do not try and share the lane. Motorcyclists, wear All The Gear, All The Time and consider taking a motorcycle rider safety course. No matter your skill level, a safety course could save your life.

ND’s newest highway safety feature

Reduced conflict intersections (RCI) are the newest safety feature coming to North Dakota highways. An RCI protects you on the road, is simple to use, and can make it faster to cross.

These intersections have been used across the country as an effective safety solution on four-lane divided highways.

Not only can they make crossing major highways easier and more efficient for traffic, they also reduce crash fatalities and serious injuries by 54%.

Three RCIs will be added along Highway 2 west of Williston this summer.

Not your average DMV

We all know the jokes about DMVs… long waits, cranky team members, slow service… for reference and a good laugh just check out the clip of the sloth from Zootopia. The NDDOT team in Driver License and Motor Vehicle are fighting back against the stereotype in a huge way and they have the emails, nice comments and customer feedback rating to prove it.

In 2021, the NDDOT installed “Happy or Not” stations to allow the public to provide real-time feedback on their experience both in person and online. The stations are located at all eight full-time Driver License sites and the Motor Vehicle site in Bismarck. They are also available online for motor vehicle and driver license renewals, driver license duplicate license requests and on the ND Drive mobile app.

The feedback system has been a success with over 225,000 people submitting responses in the last year alone with a 94% positive feedback rating. The team regularly monitors customer feedback ratings to look at trends and ways to improve.

Way to go, team, and thank you for all you do to keep North Dakota moving forward!

HR traveling to upcoming recruitment events

NDDOT’s recruitment team has a busy schedule this fall. They will be in person at multiple job fairs to speak with students about open positions, culture, benefits, growth and advancement opportunities and all the other factors that make NDDOT a fantastic place to work.

“Our recruitment team enjoys building relationships with talent early and helping personalize the recruiting and hiring process,” said Human Resources Director Nikki Sackman. “It’s important for us to meet talent where they are, be available for questions; to talk about all of the exciting things NDDOT has to offer and enhance their career exploration experience.”

In addition to outreach, the recruitment team uses other recruitment tools such as sourcing (a proactive search that involves gathering information about qualified candidates and reaching out to them), word-of-mouth, social media channels and sometimes advertising to attract quality candidates. Since Jan. 1, NDDOT has hired for 179 positions.
